Walthamstow artist Alke Schmidt explores the politics and morality of the cotton trade, from the 18th century to present day, using painting and collage elements such as found fabrics, stitch or newsprint. Through telling stories, Schmidt reveals how the trade is intertwined with issues of race and gender, exploitation and violence – exploring events such as the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building.
